Workshop: The Versatile Gelatin Plate

Explore gelatin plate printmaking using mark making, handmade stencils, and collage to create multi-layered prints without a printing press.

A group of ten artists gathered for a two-day workshop to print a variety of papers. Some monotypes were considered finished prints and others were saved as collage materials.

Exercise #1 Asemic writing over text and roll-off papers.

Exercise #2 Printing sheets of paper with texture and masking techniques.

Exercise #3 Layering with stencils and printing on tengucho (thin rice paper).

Exercise #4 Timed collaborative collage.

Exercise #5 Registering Fabriano paper to the left and right side of the gelatin plate to create two related prints—a diptych.

Exercise #6 Finished collage to fit a 12x12 mat.
