Twelve artists gathered to explore the expressive possibilities of gelatin printmaking using oil pastel transfers. The first exercise was to see how magazine, laser, Bic®pen, and oil pastels transferred to Fabriano hot press watercolor paper. Next was back painting photo laser prints on thin tengucho paper.
The expressive art of Jasper Johns was an inspiration for abstract and representational prints. An extra effect was scraping off oil pastels from printed substrates.
Jasper Johns (born May 15, 1930) uses letters and numbers as familiar, "pre-formed" icons, focusing on their graphical shape rather than their conventional meaning. Since the 1950s, he has explored these subjects through encaustic, collage, and printing, often layering, repeating, or obscuring them to turn standardized, impersonal symbols into abstract, tactile, and painterly surfaces.
