Winter Beach: Washed Stone Paper

The bluish background layers for my Winter Beach series are scans of “pickled” aluminum plates. In a multilayered file, background and foreground images can be interchanged and printed on transfer film either as separate or combined layers. Stone paper is a water resistant product made from calcium carbonate bonded with high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a plastic that can be recycled. It is smooth and has no grain, is acid-free and has a matte white surface. Transferred to limestone paper, the monoprints are washed for a flat sheen surface. A second transfer can be applied on top of the first and washed again. Black ink will bleed, so I’m careful not to wash it down the drain. When the black ink begins to run, I blot the print with soft paper towels and Q-Tips.
